Harland & Wolff Offices is where many of the world's famous ocean liners like the Titanic were designed and created. The idea of the floating hotel and grand staircase innovations that influenced today's cruise boats were created here.
The offices, built between 1886 and 1922 are now a hotel, thoughtfully restored to its former splendor. In the hall that now houses a beautiful bar, over 1,000 ships were designed including RMS Titanic. In its peak times, the White Star Line building company employed 28,000 workers and in 1911 only, built 10 luxury liners.
Robinson McIlwaine Architects took over the task to find a new use for the building
and recognize the important part that it had played in Belfast’s Shipbuilding past. The hotel now is part exhibition showing photos, documents and preserving some of the atmosphere of former innovation spirit and grandeur.
I was never interested in the Titanic tragedy until I checked into this hotel in pursuit of more information about the Troubles in Belfast. Little did I know about both. Interestingly, a week earlier, the shipyard went into administration after its troubled Norwegian parent company, did not find a buyer. The company lately had focused more on offshore construction and had only about 130 employees. ..
