A upstate New York man has been charged with attacking a Black Muslim woman after throwing her to the ground and then drawing his gun and pointing it at her and other innocent bystanders.
According to Buffalo station WBFO, authorities have charged Jeffrey Calhoun with attempted robbery in the first degree, menacing in the second degree and harassment in the second degree after a small traffic incident suddenly turned violent. Calhoun’s flight into rage was entirely captured on a cell phone video that clearly shows him refusing to let go of victim Jeanneie Muhammad’s handbag as she attempted to leave the scene. “While he was sitting in the car, he looked at me and said, you n***er, ‘You probably didn’t even have insurance,’ and I said, ‘Oh be quiet,’ ” recalled Muhammad. “So we’re going back (and forth) like this the police officer said, ‘Ma’am you can’t have this exchange.’ And he walked me down the street.” The suspect’s refusal to relinquish Muhammad’s property is likely where the attempted robbery charge comes from after his arrest. However African-American leaders in the community don’t think those charges go far enough and are calling for prosecutors to classify the attack as a hate crime. “I would like for the DA to make this a precedent also,” explained Muhammad. “I would like for it to stop here. Because nobody knows when it’s going to be them next. I never thought it would be me. I never thought someone would point a gun to me and tell me don’t move, don’t run.”
Erie County District Attorney John Flynn has responded that he’s taking the matter seriously and investigating whether the incident meets the requirements needed to classify it as a hate crime.

It’s been exactly 113 days, since I decided to part ways with my old job and venture towards a new career. Just to put that into closer perspective for you, it’s been close to 4 months since I’ve been unemployed. Grant it, the bills were still getting paid... thanks to the aid of establishing a solid 401k. Nevertheless, the unknown can be scary. As crazy as it sounds, I decided to take a leap of faith and trust that GOD already prepared me for my next opportunity. A lot of friends and family questioned my decision to quit before having anything else lined up, but let me tell you something. When you’re unhappy at your current state in life you can either complain about the situation, change the situation, or leave the situation for better. Let’s just say I attempted the first two options before finally deciding to leave.
•
Don’t get me wrong the process was rigorous. There were various nights I wondered if I’d made the right decision. I attended multiple business networking events, career fairs, seminars and probably interviewed at least 12 times throughout that 4 month period - only to be let down time after time. There’s one thing to know where you stand within the hiring process. But it’s a completely different ball game when companies sell you false hopes lacking the common decency to call you back, and at least notify you why you weren’t selected. It got a little discouraging, but this was part of my process.
•
Fast forwarding to July 10th, I received a strongly anticipated offer from a company I’m ecstatic to partner with. Emotions of gratitude, happiness, relief and all others that could possibly be developed flooded my mind simultaneously. As of today, July 22nd, you’re looking at the newest Account Executive for GPS Trackit (Global Tracking Communications, Inc).
•
This isn’t to boast nor brag, but rather to share my story with someone else who is questioning their value or wondering when that next big break will come. When you know your worth it’s almost impossible to settle for anything less. Keep pushing! And remember, the greatest fighters had to experience multiple rounds.

A Virginia Capitol police officer is apologizing after physically forcing an African-American teen to stand for the Pledge of Allegiance during a visit to the state Senate last week.
The incident unfolded Tuesday when 16-year-old Jaesean “Jae” Plummer, who was there to witness a special legislative session with fellow teens from the local Boys & Girls Club, remained seated in protest as the pledge was recited, the blog “Friendly Athiest” reported. That’s when witnesses said a white Capitol officer “physically forced Jae to stand by first tapping his shoulder, then pulling him up by his shirt” before telling the teen “in here, we stand.” Witness accounts, along with photos from the incident sparked a social media firestorm and even prompted an investigation. “To some it may not seem like a big deal, but as a black male in America this was a big issue and rightfully so,” the teen’s mom, Monica Hutchinson, said after the incident. “Our black bodies have been [and] continue to be policed and devalued every day. My son’s rights were violated. HE was violated.”
On Saturday, Hutchinson provided an update on the incident involving her son and praised Sen. Jennifer McClellan (D-Va.) for calling a meeting with Jae, his parents, herself, the police officer in question, and Col. Pike, a Clerk of the Senate. During the meeting, Hutchinson said the officer, who remains unnamed, acknowledged her wrongs and apologized to Jae “several times.”
“We do feel the apology was sincere,” she wrote in a statement posted on Facebook. “She admitted she’s never had anyone challenge, or resist her directions before so she didn’t know how to handle the situation.” Hutchinson said while Pike’s ignorance doesn’t excuse her actions, she appreciates the officer for being honest and admitting her mistake.
“She didn’t make any excuses for her actions,” Hutchinson told Atlanta Black Star in an interview.

Labrea Pringle — but my students just call me “P.” I’m working on utilizing growth mindset; so I will say that I’m getting better at introductions! I don’t really like talking about myself (another thing I’m working on), but I know these types of things are necessary to get over that first hump. SO...three things you should know: •
•
1. I am an educator. I teach 8th grade ELA. I. Love. My. Job.
2. I am an activist. I believe in toiling to do the work that advocates and fights for students in marginalized communities. I believe literacy is a true path towards freedom; and I intend on shining light on this path as long as we (education and I) both shall live. Issa real vow, y’all.
3. I am NOT an expert NOR am I a master of my craft. This page is meant for self-help purposes ONLY. This is my ministry. *Iyanla Vanzant voice* 😂 Think of it as my page of vulnerability and accountability; almost like a public diary. Yeah, that’s what we’ll call it: a public diary. •

I hope to share with you real teacher life through this page, and I hope you see and feel my passion through my posts. Let’s rock this out y’all. ✊🏽

A federal judge has awarded a former Arizona Senate staffer a million dollars in damages after a jury agreed that she was the victim of racial and sex discrimination.
According to the Arizona Republic, Talonya Adams’ lawsuit claims that in 2015 she was fired from her position as a policy adviser to the Senate’s Democratic caucus in retaliation for speaking up about her salary and workload. Adams, who is a Black woman, represented herself in the case and claimed she was paid far less than her white male counterparts, and also allotted much less vacation leave.
“Plaintiff learned that male non-African American counterparts at work received substantially higher salaries and salary increases,” the complaint filed by Adams states, adding, “Although the job responsibilities were the same, Plaintiff had a heavier workload and the more challenging committee assignments.” Adams also found it curious she was the only policy adviser who didn’t receive a raise during her tenure, despite being “a strong performer who didn’t receive negative criticisms during her employment.”
When she voiced her concerns in an email to then-Senate minority leader and current Secretary of State Katie Hobbs, her correspondence was called “inappropriate,” and her direct requests for a raise to close the pay gap were denied.

Unfortunately, a few days after this interaction, Adams had to travel to Seattle for a family medical emergency. Even though she maintained contact with her superiors during her time away, and at some points even “performed some of her work duties,” the suit claims she was still abruptly terminated for “insubordination and abandonment of her job.” Monday, a jury sided with Adams’ claims of discrimination, and the million dollar award she received is for compensatory damages, emotional distress and any loss of “enjoyment of life.”
A hearing to review non-compensatory damages has been scheduled for August 14, and if the court rules in her favor again, Adams could be awarded additional funds.

A Philadelphia man is speaking out following his 25-year imprisonment for a murder he did not commit.
Chester Hollman tells CBS Philadelphia that life as a free man still feels like a dream. He was found guilty of a murder on May 4, 1993 and sentenced to life imprisonment, but was freed from state prison in Luzerne County, Pa., this month after a key witness testified in 2012 that she gave false testimony, claiming police pressured her to incriminate Hollman. Prosecutors said authorities also failed to disclose key evidence that pointed to other suspects. “I don’t think it’s really hit me yet still. Just this morning, I learned that this was happening. I’m still a little in shock, disbelief,” Hollman tells the station. Defense attorney Alan Tauber called it “a glorious day,” according to NBC Philadelphia, adding outside the courthouse: “We have a flawed system and innocent people do go to jail. But we have a great system, because there is a means for correcting that.” Meanwhile, as Hollman adjusts to life as a free man, the real killer could still be on the streets.
“That’s the kind of shame that happens and you have people in law enforcement, including in this office, who ignore their oath, who ignore the Constitution and who engage in misconduct, which is what happened,” District Attorney Larry Krasner said.
“It was pretty clear to us that unfortunately the police department and the district attorney’s office actually had evidence in their possession back at the time of trial. Had they disclosed that to the defense like they’re constitutionally and ethically required to do, Mr. Hollman might not have ever stood trial, quite frankly,” Patricia Cummings, supervisor of the District Attorney’s Office Conviction Integrity Unit, said.

Hollman is set to appear in court on July 30 where his charges will be formally dismissed. In the meantime, he’s thankful for the passionate people “who fought hard” for his release.
“The biggest thing is that I don’t want to let anyone down,” he said.

It's uber important to #theAcademy365 team that we educate our young KINGS on the importance of making the right post-secondary options.
___________________________________________________________
The ability to think critically and making effective decisions as it pertains to their post secondary options is critical to their long term financial freedom. ——————————————————————————-
Stoping generational curses also mean not letting our future generations not fall victim to educational loan debt and not having anything to show for it.

Major credit to the great team @politiscopeapp for the constantly providing important relatable content.

Earlier this month, I hosted a summer youth retreat for @checbellmen, a group of young men I’ve been honored to mentor and tutor. In my work, I get to create opportunities for them to fly, prepare home cooked meals (and clean after), tour colleges, and more. I create safe spaces for them to be them and learn along the way. I was like a stressed dad the whole time😫, but it was great😌. Before flying home, they put their change together to buy me a thank you gift. New #JBL Bluetooth headphones🎧.
