I went into Blinded by the Light expecting a coming of age story fueled by the songs of Bruce Springsteen. Admittingly I am not a fan of The Boss but I am a fan of coming of age tales. I was pleasantly surprised to find a story filled with depth. The story doesn't shy away from the political turmoil that Pakistani’s faced in the 80’s, the struggles we have growing up and learning who we are and, what surprised me the most, wrestling with what it means to be asian vs. British. It’s a theme I’ve been thinking and discussing about at nauseum these past couple of weeks but it’s one that still surprises me because I’m not pakistani and I’m not British but I understand Javed’s battle.
Like I said, I didn’t grow up listening to Bruce Springsteen or idolizing his songs but I found the Director, Gurinder Chadha, effectively uses and visualizes his music to be an emotional backdrop for the story to lean on.
This is a really great movie. Go check it out!
