Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, one of the most formative pieces of fiction I have ever experienced, a game so complex there are still nuanced themes and ideologies that I am wrapping my head around today, 17 years after its release.
A soldier named Raiden is sent to an offshore cleanup facility which has been commandeered by terrorists, but when the truth unravels, his mission is completely changed.
There are so many little details I could talk about, the amazing and varied cast of wacky villains, the baton switch of the protagonist (which if you dig into is actually genius), even smaller details such as the way the mechs roar like kaiju or the the fact that Snakes codename is 'Iroquois Pliskin'. I still get goosebumps to this day everytime I replay the game and get to the cutscene where Snake dives into the water chasing after Metal Gear Ray, I remember that moment feeling like the most epic thing I'd ever seen at the time, my heart racing as a man was in pursuit of a machine one hundred times bigger than him. I don't think my choice is always the first on everyone's list when asked what the best Metal Gear Solid game is, and I don't know if I think it is the best, but I can say without out a doubt that it is certainly my favourite. "Life isn’t just about passing on your genes. We can leave behind much more than just DNA. Through speech, music, literature and movies... what we’ve seen, heard, felt anger, joy and sorrow, these are the things I will pass on. That’s what I live for. - Solid Snake.
