•Start bulking: When you a) have 0 muscle on your frame and/or (b) You’re sufficiently lean. (a) should be self-explanatory however (b) may not. Remember, maintenance of very low BF% is NOT healthy & how 90% of your year should be spent. The hormonal environment created when trying to maintain low BF% will threaten LBM retention, yet alone promote it (Rossow et al 2013, Maestu et al 2010, Hagmar et al 2013). In fact, (with a surplus) you are now primed for LBM growth as lean individuals demonstrate more efficient nutrient partitioning showing 60-70% of initial weight gain to be LBM vs 30-40% in overweight (Forbes 2000) so take advantage & BULK!

•Keep bulking: When you are (a) Making good progress in the gym and/or (b) Still sufficiently lean enough. At this stage you’re in a calorie surplus & able to more easily increase intensity/volume in the gym. Add this to still being sufficiently lean & you’d be stupid to start a cut (unless competing). Self-explanatory I hope

•Stop bulking: Once you get fat! As you reach higher BF%, a greater proportion of the weight you gain becomes fat mass rather than LBM (Forbes, 1987). Furthermore, the fatter you get, the more insulin resistant you become (McDonald 2008) which again, goes hand in hand with the above in that calories are more likely to be partitioned towards fat vs muscle. Here is a legday workout that killed me by my coach @hyacine_nassir .

Starting with warming up and stretch a bit ( not filmed) really important ! .
1-Leg extention : 10 completed reps + 10 partiels x 3 .
2-Hack squat 3 x 8-10 reps ( moderate / heavy weights)
.
3-Hack squat 2x 20 reps ( light weight ) .
4-Lunges 3x10-12 per leg .
5- Leg press 3x 10-12 reps
.
6-Deadlift + leg curl ( not filmed ) 
3x10-12 reps.
.
I try to work on the tempo and slow executions , that matters to me more than how many reps or how much weights I lift as I’m trying to improve my movements and feel every rep. .

I recently saw that a few respectable men were entering a challenge amongst themselves, so naturally I had to partake to challenge myself.

The #pftchallenge was a
3 mile run for time
Max effort pull ups
2min of sit ups.

I hate sit ups.

@starttheworld and I challenged each other to the pull & sit up section together.

He beat me by 1 pull up & 4 sit ups, I beat his run time.

My end results were:
3 mile run in 18:42 
17 pull ups
51 sit ups in 2min.

Age: 38
Height 6’3”
Weight 222lbs

For whatever reason, there seems to be a "one or the other" attitude when it comes to cardio and strength training. For a lot of people, they preach strength training and have a "no cardio" rule with themselves as if cardio training is for the weak. Yet, there are so many benefits to cardio, just like strength training. In fact, everyone, regardless of their goal, should be doing both as they each have their own benefits let alone being lean and fit. Cardio can reduce risk of numerous health conditions, keep your heart healthy and reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, build aerobic endurance and even have benefits towards your strength training (better aerobic system conditioning means less time needed to restore energy between sets of a strength training bout). Strength training has the known benefits of building muscle mass and strength, but also is important for bone density and reducing the risk of osteoporosis, improved mechanical function of the body in day-to-day tasks, and can increase resting metabolic rate (more muscle mass means more calories burned at rest). As you can see, both are extremely important for overall health and fitness let alone aesthetics. Get both in and get all the benefits.
