Throwing it back about 16 months ago, when Benny was 11 months, the same age Sam is now.
He still gives me that same look today 😂 When I try to explain something to him, I make sure he looks me in the eyes and then I see this, the face of him processing and trying to make sense of what I’m saying.
As a kid, I was one of those that always asked why. And as an adult, I still do sometimes (only if I really care to know the answer) because I believe everything has a reason. And if I explain to my kids why we do or don’t do something, then one, I’m respecting them as a person by giving them an explanation, two, I’m teaching them cause and effect, and three, it allows them to make their own decisions based off facts. For example, If I explained to them why we use umbrellas when it’s raining so that we don’t get wet, versus not telling them why, then if they choose to step out of the umbrella, they know ahead of time the consequence or affect it will have on them.
Parenting is not a dictatorship; it is a relationship. Yes, we make the rules and build boundaries, but if we want our kids to respect us and others one day, we have to lead by example and respect them first. Character is built in the home 🏠
