Apologises for being inactive recently. Just been a busy time.

But got some good news. My physio is really happy with my progress and so I’ve got my last session on 13th September.
-
I’ve been cleared to go to the gym, so signed up and have my inductions this morning. Got myself a little plan so will share that when I’m next there. I’m hoping to go 3 times a week at the moment, plus I can swim there because of the pool.

I’m off to Leeds festival this weekend so will share photos then. See you soon!

🧬The anterior talofibular ligament attaches from the distal end of the fibula to the talus. It is the most commonly injured ligament during a lateral ankle sprain in which the foot is generally “rolled” into plantar flexion and inversion.

🧫 Since there are various grades of ligament damage, this is not meant to be an all encompassing post. If you have a grade 3 ankle sprain or fracture associated with the injury, initial rest, crutches, and management from a medical doctor may be indicated. If you have a grade 1 ankle sprain, you may be back on your feet within a week. These exercises are meant to serve as a general guideline since each situation will be unique.

🧸Range of Motion: Ankle pumps, ABCs, and ankle circles are easy, non weightbearing exercises that can be utilized to introduce low threat movement. Perform them slowly, comfortably, and periodically throughout the day to reduce stiffness and swelling.

💃Balance: Begin single leg balance as soon as it’s tolerable. Use your hands to start if needed and gradually make it more challenging as you aim for 30-60 seconds.

💪🏼Local Strength: Banded eversion is usually well tolerated and may be a good way to introduce light load to the ankle.

🥊Global Strength: Get the rest of the body moving as quickly as possible. Squat, bridge, deadlift, etc. If you’re in a boot, you can still strengthen the knees and hips using machines, bands, or cuff weights.

ACHILLES TENDON PAIN.⠀
Following on from our BLOG on 5 COMMON RUNNING INJURIES lets dive a little deeper into each one. ⠀
People suffering with ACHILLES TENDON PAIN will usually notice:⠀
➡️A sharp pain in the morning when taking the first few steps out of bed.⠀
➡️Pain initially at the start of a run with many experiencing no pain during the run only for the pain to increase within the next 24 hours. ⠀
➡️It may feel better with some rest only for the pain to return when returning to training.⠀

Usually the cause of the pain is due to inflammation as the athlete has done too much too soon in terms of loading of the tendon itself. Following on from our BLOG on 5 COMMON RUNNING INJURIES lets dive a little deeper into each one. ⠀
People suffering with ACHILLES TENDON PAIN will usually notice:⠀
➡️A sharp pain in the morning when taking the first few steps out of bed.⠀
➡️Pain initially at the start of a run with many experiencing no pain during the run only for the pain to increase within the next 24 hours. ⠀
➡️It may feel better with some rest only for the pain to return when returning to training.⠀

This girl was SO consistent with the home exercises I gave her that she is killing her progress!

She went from being unable to perform a heel raise and inability to perform single leg stance to performing 20 heel raises with no pain AND performing single leg stance on a foam surface for 30 seconds!! It’s always so exciting to see progress like that!

With that improvement, this session we focused more on advanced balance and stability drills. ⏩

This hamstring stretch feels amazing  on its own, but sometimes I add in a little trick where I have the client engage and push against my resistance. Strengthening and lengthening at the same time produces longer lasting results.

You can also this on your own! Try using a resistance band to “pull” your leg into a stretch (do this under control with light resistance) and then drive your leg back down to the ground. Each time, let your hamstrings stretch a little further. Breathe and ease into the stretch and not into a painful range.

This is an especially helpful technique for very tight muscles OR for someone who is hypermobile and already pretty flexible but ‘feels’ tight.

Training the traps has been mainly done by performing shrugs which is not the most effective trap exercise since the traps are not strong elevators of the scapula but rather upward rotators of it and the clavicle. Because of their diagonal line of pull the traps upper and middle traps perform retraction rather than strict elevation (Johnson et al 1994). You can see the difference by palpating your upper trap and performing elevation strictly up and then raise your arm which will perform upward rotation; you will notice the difference in how much the trap is contracting. ⠀ ⠀
The upper trap also does not make up a large volume of the whole trap which is mostly made of the mid traps and the low traps. The mid trap which performs retraction sits around C6 a vertebra which creates the bulk of mass of the trap that is visible from the front which what most people that train traps for hypertrophy are looking for.
⠀
To train the traps it may help to perform retraction based exercises that focus on drawing in the shoulder blades together rather than elevating them. This can be done with scapular retraction, full rows, face pulls or wide grip shrugs which help facilitate retraction and upward rotation. The wide grip shrugs have been shown to lead to greater trap activation (Pizzari et al 2014). A good way to train the traps for strength however is farmer carries which helps build strong isometric strength which can be helpful for strength training lifts like the deadlift, and Olympic weightlifting.

​When the pressure is on, it's easy to get caught up in the physical exam i.e active vs passive range of motion of a joint without really listening & understanding what our client is experiencing.

​We have to remind ourselves that we are in the industry of helping people change. If our goal is to be a catalyst for change, our clients have to feel understood and heard. This requires us to actively listen and ask good questions before we jump in and become advice monsters 👹

​My orthopedic mentor, Martin, always said:

Je me présente, Louise, 22 ans, jeune maman épanouie depuis le 15 juillet 2019 d’une petite Charlotte. 
J’ai passé toute ma grossesse à étudier les principaux piliers de l’éducation positive, de la bienveillance et de la physiologie de l’enfant à travers des textes, bouquins et blogs. Et maintenant que je suis enfin maman je découvre la réalité des choses, c’est extraordinaire !
L’allaitement était une évidence pour moi, ce n’était pas possible autrement ! Ce partage d’amour et de bonnes choses ainsi que le lien d’attachement que cela crée, impossible de louper ça !
Tout ce passe pour le mieux et nous partageons un début début d’aventure lactée exceptionnelle sans aucun bobo, je croise les doigts 🤞🏻
Le portage était aussi un point important pour moi, d’allier portage physiologique et maternage, je débute encore dans les différentes façons de porter ma fille mais c’est déjà de super moments qu’on passe ensemble 🌸
On pratique également un peu de cododo mais pas exclusif, nous tenions à la laisser découvrir et s’habituer à sa chambre, son espace, son univers. Elle dort seule dans son lit de son couché à son réveil (elle fait ses nuits depuis la naissance, qu’elle veine!) puis le matin c’est gros câlin avec une grosse tétée et dodo ventral en peau à peau, c’est notre moment pour bien commencer la journée, cela peut durer 2 ou 3h !! #maternage #physio #portage #portagephysio #maman #allaitementmaternel #calin #instagram #picoftheday #mum #maman #cododo #jpmbb #loveradius #amour #love #ilikeit
