After making it to the top of one of the peaks at Hurricane Ridge today with the family, we decided that a fun shot like this was necessary! 💪🏼😁

This morning's strength and conditioning session kicked off with power.
All I can say is after all the stretching I did on my hips and explosive warmup drills, they still didn't want to play ball 🤷‍♂️

Here we have our athletes going through multidirectional plyo jumps with loaded landmine squats and split squats with added extension!👊🔥

1️⃣Multidirectional Jumps- stick each landing before proceeding to next jump, hips square, and above knee joint 
2️⃣Depth Drop to Bound- quick ground reaction time, and stick landing before moving to next
3️⃣Landmine Squats- pause at bottom for 1 second, and drive up in full extension. Hips through and drive up on toes
4️⃣Split Squat to Press- drive back with 1 second pause at bottom, and drive back up pressing bar out in front
5️⃣SL Box Hops- drive up on single leg bringing knee to 90 degrees, use arms to drive up, and control with soft landing

Countless sports contain a rotational aspect. Think of a rugby league/rugby union pass, golf swing, baseball swing, or any sport that involves throwing, etc. Hence, why it can be advantageous for these athletes to develop rotational strength/power.

Med ball throws are a great way to develop rotational power! You can get creative in terms of how the ball is held/thrown, in order to make it better match the movement pattern performed in the sport.

I will generally start athletes with the half-kneeling variation (as seen in the video), then we might progress to standing and then might add approach steps, etc. The half-kneeling variation is a good initial variation, as it takes out the lower body, so there are less moving parts. Focus on rotating the trunk, not just using the arms!

Regaining quad contraction and strength is a huge component in rehab regardless of what stage you’re at. I’m often surprised at how people present when they come to me from other facilities. The quads (in addition to range of motion) sets the foundation for rehab. In the immediate post operative phase, I encourage my patients to perform quad sets hundreds of times a day. One of the primary indicators of being safe to return to sports is having 90% quad strength as compared to the non effected side. This by no means reducing the importance of hamstring, glutes and calf strength.

The quads has many functions and working on them in a variety of ways in rehab is important. Changing tempos, adding weight, changing box heights are all different ways of altering the difficulty of the exercise.
1️⃣ Eccentric reverse step downs - here we’re challenging eccentric control of the quads. This is an 18 inch box and I cued her to slowly down backwards and as soon as the back foot hits the ground, she should explode back to the starting position. This is a higher level quad exercises and I’ll typically do these for less repetitions.

Newest version of the garage gym is pretty much complete. Newly added wall mounted plate storage and @betitanfit bench with @repfitnessequipment pad. There’s a lot more I wanna end up adding in the future like mating the rest of the garage and getting rid of the low row and lat pull down for a combo unit of the two, along with ghd and belt squat. So far this is the best version and glad to have this space for my family

We’ve been able to have and make so much good food this summer. All the vegetables! Duck confit, squash, tomatoes, and hot peppers from the garden, so many fish dishes, different salsas, and more.

Every year I try to convince more and more people to start small gardens. Something manageable and maybe expand once they get comfortable. It’s a ton of fun, sometimes frustrating, and you learn a lot whether you wanted to or not. I’m pretending it’s not all coming to end soon.

TIP: Never allow short-term goals to overshadow long-term health.

Many coaches, trainers, and clients are so focused on a short term goal (lost 20lbs, run X miles, lift X weight 10 times) that they neglect long term health in order to chase these arbitrary goals. Since it typically takes years to see the residual impact these micro-traumas, many times trainers have long since patted themselves on the back for helping their client lose 20lbs and they will never be faulted for the long term damage they have done. A common theme of questions among performance coaches and trainers about specific methods can be exemplified in this question, “My athletes can squat a lot more weight if they have a wide stance, feet turned out, etc…so won’t changing these positions limit their development?”

The answer to this question is, “Keep in mind the long-term goals and development of the athlete.” Most athletes are not aiming to squat as much weight as possible (besides powerlifters), but are looking for sustainable performance gains in their sport.

If the goal is to maximize power output during the squat, then sure, a wider stance and slightly turned out foot position can be used to generate more force. The problem arises when the person is moving to this position because he or she HAS to, not because they want to.

TRY THIS: Take the time to build a solid foundation in anything you are doing. If you are starting a new fitness program, training method, sport, or activity, take a true novice approach and stay a novice for longer than you think is necessary. Focus on DOMINATING the novice level exercises instead of jumping levels as fast as possible. For example, in yoga you can work on having a stable, solid base and full control of your breath and body in each position before trying the "advanced" options given by the instructor. Adopt a "white-belt mentality" and focus on mastering the basics first to set yourself up for long term success.
