Hip Labral Tear Exercises: Glute Focus

If you haven’t read any of my fitness blog posts, I have been dealing with a tear in the labrum of my left hip since March. It has been slowly but surely improving, and I’ve recently been easing back into some classes. Although I’m still avoiding exercises where my affected hip would have to flex above 90 degrees, high impact cardio, hot yoga classes, and limiting rotation (both internally and externally) of my left leg. A large portion of my PT exercises have been glute focused to strengthen and support around the hip. Ever since I saw big improvements from my first set of prescribed exercises, I have been looking for exercises to switch some things up, and I haven’t found a lot out there. So, I decided to film what I have been doing! That being said, not all labral tears are the same, this is just what has been working for me. I’ve been adding on and amping up the set of exercises given by my ortho PA a few months ago. I think I’ll also be posting the core and arm sections in separate posts. I am not a qualified trainer, but these exercises have been approved by my amazing friend @ballerina_fit, creator of @balletfittheory!

1. Side leg lifts and stability leg lifts- 30 reps on each side (laying on side extending to the side and laying on stomach extending back)
2. Bridges with hammer curls- 30 reps
3. Add yoga ball (or sliders) and hold weight- 10 slow reps (so far, recently added this one)
4. Banded donkey kicks- 30 reps each side
5. Banded “Triangle steps”- 30 reps each side (started out only doing on affected side)
6. “Lawn mower”- 30 reps (only on affected side)
7. “Windmill”- 30 reps each side (started out only doing on affected side)
8. 1 leg bridge- 30 reps (only on affected side)
9. Banded side steps- 30 reps back and forth (4-5 steps down the mat and 4-5 steps back)
10. Reverse dead lifts- 30 reps each side (started out only doing on affected side)

We ran in honor of @audrakunard’s cousin Kurt Curtis who was killed in action 10 years ago today. We all carried something with us on the run and it was a beautiful day of honoring and remembering him.

First run back in Oz, after almost 5 weeks in Europe. I didn't run once the whole time over there. In fact, I didn't even pack my running shoes. Instead we walked about 20,000 steps most days, hiked down mountains, and generally had a great time. It was great to have a break from everything. Much-needed. But my (short) run this morning was excellent. hi friends happy sunnnday! feeling much much better today than I have all week. I’m sure I’m not the only one who gets in that “go go go” mindset and completely neglects listening to what my body is trying to tell me. I’ve been so mentally and physically fatigued all week but kept pushing myself - finally I realized that continuing to #grind when I’m running on empty isn’t going to get me anywhere ✌🏽 so this morning I stayed in bed til 9 (for the first time since june) and took my workout easy. Tomorrow I’m going to sleep in and rest too. .

Please don’t let the #fitness world (lol) make you think you should always be pushing yourself to the max. Working hard on resting counts as hard work too ok? .

I hope this ramble is a little reminder to listen to your bod this week & take all the rest you need 🌊💙 I swear it’ll get you further in the long run ✨ .

Meanwhile at the Lab... it was an active recovery day with Dorthy 🚲 & Rose 🚣. .
The workout:
1:30 easy Ride w/Dorthy
250m Row w/Rose
20 push-ups 
2 Turkish Get-Ups each side

We continued for rounds for 30 mins at a nice and steady pace. The purpose of this workout was to speed up the recovery process, burn fat, & feel fresh 💪🏼😎🔥

I’m feeling strong heading into Week 6 of #philadelphiamarathontraining 🏃🏻‍♀️I was pushed outside of my comfort zone and normal running routine this weekend while running Clay Loop. My hips have yet to forgive me for all of the hills but finishing a solid 13 in more challenging conditions than I’m used to put me right where I need to be mentally. I’m feeling motivated and looking forward to this week’s runs 💪🏼 #marathontraining #phillymarathontraining #clermontclayloop #seawheezevirtualhalf  #seawheeze #thesweatlife #runitout #motherrunner #longrunsaturday #run

The old Ash would’ve gave up after the first or second time of not succeeding at something but the new Ash has a determined soul!

At first I don’t succeed, I try again and again... and again... until I get it!

Today, I was determined to get a headstand!  I have been practicing a lot and I wanted it today!  I got it finally after a lot of trying AND THEN... I got a very controlled one until the end landing!  But I got it!

I’m thankful I don’t give up on myself easily anymore and I always keep pushing myself!

FIRST OUTDOOR RUN SINCE JUNE. NO BATHROOM STOPS. SMILED THE WHOLE TIME. EXCITING! I almost turned around and ran back home after about .4 miles. I was nervous something MIGHT happen — that my stomach MIGHT go crazy, that I MIGHT urgently need a bathroom. But instead of going home, I stayed really close to it and just sort of ran back and forth near all the local hotspots — bathrooms — for a while, and then eventually ran a little further from them because I actually felt GOOD. Relaxed, even. And so happy. It was 3.3 miles of absolute joy, and I’ll be honest, I needed every single step of it. So darn grateful.

@activewithava inspired me to do a face post bc 1) she’s goals and 2) I didn’t work out this weekend bc I was busy celebrating my BFFs bday and I wanna update y’all on my life!! •
Like I said, I didn’t work out this weekend but I DID manage to eat pretty decently, which I’M SO PROUD OF! 
Eating well is the thing I’m the WORST at, but with small victories I’m getting there. Tbh the worst thing I had was a cupcake w/o icing and like 3 Smirnoff ices over the 3 days I was there so YEEET.
At restaurants I stuck to grilled chicken/rice & olive oil pasta w/ shrimp, and a short drink or two. We also had hard boiled eggs for brekkie which my bff taught me how to make! Here’s for fun weekends with best friends and still managing to avoid binging 🥳🥳

This weekend I helped out at @freetobepoweryoga ‘s teacher training. It was the first weekend for the new class and it brought back allllll the memories from last year. Truly an inspiring weekend and only has me craving more and more yoga/wellness education (coming for you some day @baptisteyoga level 1). I get so caught up and busy in my every day life that I forget how important it is to actually work on myself. Working on myself means that I am able to show up better in all other aspects of my life. PS this is not the way you are supposed to do dancer pose, but it looks fancy for Instagram. 🤷🏻‍♀️ #donttrythisathome ⠀⠀

We both placed at today’s #bridgetobridge 12K! 🏃🏻‍♀️placed 2nd in age group and 5th overall female, 🏃🏻‍♂️placed 3rd in his age group and 30th overall. Both of us using this as a workout "race" in our training build-up.

After a short break and some refueling with @genucan we swapped shoes and added more mileage for our #marathontraining (🏃🏻‍♀️+6 miles, 🏃🏻‍♂️+7.5 ). Thankful for the perfect SF running weather - foggy with little headwind.
