The term functional fitness has always rubbed me the wrong way. Some people say machine and cable work isn't functional. If loading a muscle through it's full contractile range isn't functional, then I don't know what is.

From a hypertrophy standpoint we want to both train the muscle through it's entire contractile range, as well as be able to isolate it as a means of increasing the total volume of mechanical tension on the muscle. Both of which are acomplished by the half kneeing straight arm pulldown.

When most people train the lats, they only train them through the bottom 90 degrees of the muscles contractile range (DL, row variations, etc). Additionally, few movements actually isolate the lats without significant contribution from other muscles.

One of the reasons I like the half kneeling straight arm pulldown is that it allows you to keep the the lats under tension throughout the movement.

Being that mechanical tension is the primary driver of muscle growth, this is key. By moving my center of mass forward during flexion and backward during extension the strength curve is staying constant. which means fiber recruitment will be constant without any sticking points.

There is also a good evidence suggesting that we want to load in a stretched position with a high degree of mechanical tension for hypertrophy. There are a handful of machines that accomplish this, but with the equipment selection found in most Crossfit style gyms that becomes quite difficult. This movement is on a short list of options i've found for doing so, and if you can use a cable setup for more accurate loading over time that would be ideal.

A lot of the times I would feel like I'm not doing enough, like I can do more. Or my results are not as goos as someone else's results.

But guess what, the cliche and cheesy quotes are true. The only one you're competing with is yourself! And even if this is not completely true, even if you're competing with the whole world, no matter how much progress you make, as long as you show up at the gym, you're beating everyone sitting at home and watching TV on the couch!

So, get up and make sure you show up!
